Round 19 Preview

I’m still on Holidays, and if all things have gone to plan, I have no idea what’s happened in the footy and I don’t want to.  Here’s some tips, in all their brevity.

Geelong vs St Kilda        Kardinia Park     Thursday Night

The Cats either won or lost last week, as did St Kilda so this either sees them in good stead or desperate for a win in this match.  Confused?  Geelong by 17 points.

Sydney vs Adelaide        SCG        Friday Night

The Swans are on cloud nine after beating the Dockers, or perhaps they’re not…I don’t know.  Adelaide had a good win over Gold Coast…I reckon.  This match should be good to watch.  Sydney by 21 points.

Port Adelaide vs Fremantle        Adelaide Oval   Saturday Afternoon

The Power will be shut off or cut off or any other range of energy related gimmicky references that often come up with Port Adelaide.  Fremantle by 31 points.

North Melbourne vs Melbourne              Marvel Stadium               Saturday Afternoon

The two teams with ‘Melbourne’ in their name.  That’s about as deep as I care to go into this analysis.  Melbourne by 28 points.

Collingwood vs Carlton                 MCG      Saturday Night

Old Rivals and usually worth writing about, but by now I’m on my 5th Pina Colada and losing focus.  Did Fraser win last week?  If so, this is likely to be just the fuel that Collingwood needs to win.  Otherwise, Carlton would like revenge for that draw earlier.  Carlton by 1 point.  Or go the draw if you have a flair for the dramatic.

West Coast vs Brisbane                 Perth Stadium   Saturday Night

Essendon last week and West Coast this week.  At this rate, people might forget that Brisbane exists.  Brisbane by 71 points.

Richmond vs Hawthorn                                MCG      Sunday Afternoon

It’s easier to tip when the games are like this.  Hawthorn by 54 points.

Gold Coast vs Footscray                                Carrara Sunday Afternoon

This could be the match of the round.  It’s that dewy oval that always gets me.  Footscray has a pretty good record up there if memory serves me correctly.  Footscray by 12 points.

Essendon vs GWS            Marvel Stadium               Sunday Afternoon

Now this is a match worth me writing a few words.  That’ll do.  GWS by 44 points.

2025 Pre-Finals Break – State Of The Game

  Last Week      8/10     Season Total 152/207 (73.4%) We’ve reached that time of year again when we take a pause.   Not that anyone really wants one, but we are forced to sit through one anyway.   But this gives us time to reflect on the State of the Game.   If you’re a chronic reader or a masochist, then you’ve read all of my missives this year and noted that I’ve repeatedly said I’m getting a bit bored with the footy.   There’s just not that much in it these days.   I’ve been trying to pinpoint the reason why? What the Stats Say Is it because there is a clear two-speed economy going?   There are teams that have it and then teams that have not.   Most games are one sided and predictable and I think I only got 26% of my tips wrong just to mix it up a bit.   That could be it.   Or could it be that when I watch a game it’s usually pretty frustrating watching terrible ball movements patter...

Finals - 2024 Grand Final Review

 The season is done and what an end to the season it was.  By that, I mean it was really disappointing.  After one of the closest seasons in history, it was really disappointing that the Grand Final was such a blowout.  Firstly, lets deal with Sydney.  If you’re a Sydney supporter, you’re not going to like the next bit…I suggest you skip the next paragraph. Luckily, the English language is highly flexible and has words for almost everything.   The word that I feel most fits this situation is ‘Insipid’.   Or maybe I’d choose deplorable.   Sydney was bad…really bad.   They didn’t even turn up.   A lot of their positive attitude responses at the end of the game was that they’d prefer to get to the Grand Final to have a chance to swing a punch than not get there at all.   The problem is that they didn’t throw a punch.   If you’re running the rope-a-dope strategy, the key to it is once your opponent is tired from smashing you, you...
