Round 22 AFL Preview

Last Week           4/9           Season Total      113/180   Tipping officially has knobs on it.   If you picked Port Adelaide to beat Sydney last week you were guessing.   If you picked them by 100+ points, then you are certifiably insane.   The AFL say they want it this way.   There were so many games within a goal last week that you could feel really hard done by if you scored as low as…I don’t know, say, 4.   Yes, I feel hard done by. Retirement season has begun in earnest with Dusty, Hawkins and Gaff officially pulling the rip cord on their careers.   We salute them for their contributions and wonder where in future they will pop their heads up.   Dusty likely will slink into the night the same way that Plugger did, and Hawkins and Gaff are also not likely to go the media route.   I’m predicting thigh m...

Round 21 AFL Preview

Last Week           5/9           Season Total      109/171   There is so much to talk about.   The Aussies are killing it in Paris.   Not only do we have a few in the pool as we normally do, but we’ve bagged one in a canoe and also one on a bike.   The canoe was impressive as Fox just snuck into the final, floated down first and then had to wait for the entire rest of the field to go through.   Knife edge stuff.   I was most impressed by the Time Trial win by Grace Brown.   The road was wet and super slippery with most riders taking a fall and losing some bark and the rest being too cautious.   Brown blitzed the field. The Olympics is a great time, where every 4 years I become an avid watcher of sports I just don’t get to watch any other time.   I watched the Korean women’s archery team win the gold medal fo...

Round 20 AFL Preview

Last Week           7/9           Season Total      104/162 What a week it was.  I’m not just talking about the tipping.  7 from 9 was not a bad return, but so much was happening, it just wasn’t funny.  Of course, the biggest of news was that Joe Biden finally pulled out of the race for president.  This of course is a problem for Donald Trump because a campaign that relies on waiting for Joe to have a Senior moment now requires quite a bit of writing and thought…not Trumps strong points.  And he will have some serious social issues not being able to make any comments on race, religion or gender.  Given his penchant for, shall we say, stretching the truth a little, I’m not sure he even has Kamala covered off the tee.  I also have a lot of lines about him giving her an ear full or an ear bashing, but I’ll stop short of wax...

Round 19 AFL Preview

Last Week           7/9           Season Total      97/153   What a week to take a vacation.   There was so much to write about.   Adam Simpson exited West Coast and Heeney lost his Brownlow.   Could there be a bigger story?   I mean, someone would have to take a shot at an ex-President to be a bigger story.   Oh!   Well, he did say he’d give his right ear to be president again.   Now, the way things go there in the US he will be a shoo-in for the next top guy, and he’ll do it with substantial donations from the NRA.   It’s a funny old world, isn’t it? Last weeks’ vacation was jam-packed with good times for the kids.   So much so that now if my daughter is sedentary for more than three minutes, she tells me how bored she is.   I guess that’s a success.   This week is the last week that won’t be...

Round 18 AFL Preview

Last Week           4/9           Season Total      90/144   I’m writing this week’s preview a week ahead of schedule because I’m taking a pilgrimage to Melbourne to actually go to a game at the MCG.  It’s a trip I don’t do often enough anymore but having young kids comes with responsibilities apparently.  I’m taking the kids, one who will see their first game of footy so why not expose her to 80,000 rabid Collingwood supporters and expand her vocabulary.  Don’t worry, the trip is actually about the kids, and we will be doing loads of stuff for them.  This is the one Dad activity for the trip. As I don’t have last week’s results to share with you yet, I can instead tell you a couple of things not to do with your tipping.  They can be summed up as ‘don’t look back.’  I took a look back at my tipping to see if I could l...

Round 17 AFL Preview

Last Week           5/9           Season Total      86/135 Once again, the footy proved difficult to pick.  I was busy the whole weekend so didn’t watch a second of it.  Thankfully the stuff I was doing permitted me to listen to almost every second of it on the shortwave radio.  Well, I was streaming it on my phone so, I think it goes like this…the shortwave of the radio at about 90m in length gets converted to electrons at a base station and then converted to a 5G wave which is about 70mm in length.  It is then processed by my router where it is converted to electrons again and then back into electro-magnetic waves and re-distributed to my phone at my wi-fi wavelength which is around 45m, where it is then converted to electrons and then back into sound waves and broadcast as normal sound at varying wavelengths which my ear converts to...

Round 16 AFL Preview

Last Week           6/6           Season Total      81/126   Promise I won’t talk about my testicles this week.   Or how magnificent they are.   Although…ok, I won’t.   It was a funny old week in Sport.   The first thing I noticed was Australia’s loss to Afghanistan in the T20 match.   I’m writing this pre-amble before the Afghanistan vs Bangladesh match, but we have already lost to India, so we wait with anticipation for the result.   A Cummings hat-trick can’t even save us.   Ironically, we held the fate of England in our hands and the media toyed with the idea of throwing the match to stick one up the Poms.   While I doubt this was ever seriously considered by the team, Sandpaper aside, they have too much integrity, it now looks like England will advance and Australia will not. But to compensate for Austra...
